Calhoun County finished second - a distant second - to Oak Glen in the West
Virginia High School Class AA/A State Tournament completed Saturday night in
Huntington.
The Red Devils did this without a state champion marking the first time in
several years the Red Devils did not have a state champion.
Calhoun scored 132.5 points to finish second to Oak Glen, which won its 10th
straight AA/A title with 203.5 points. Point Pleasant was third with 119
points followed by Independence, Williamstown, Roane, Herbert Hoover,
Grafton, Greenbrier West and Braxton County.
Calhoun had three wrestlers reach the championship round but all three lost.
At 129 Tyler Bain was pinned by Ravenswood's undefeated David Dennis at 5:10
of the match.
Eddie Burrows lost a 6-3 decision to Herbert Hoover Wes Hanson at 125.
In probably the biggest upset of the night Calhoun's Paul Goodrich dropped a
3-1 decision to Jacob Antoine of Independence at 189.
Goodrich was
considered the favorite to win the title at that weight.
The Red Devils got third place finishes from Justin Ramsey (135) and Caleb
Hart (145) while getting fourth place finishes from Justin Whipkey (275).
Jaron Sampson (130) was fifth while Sean Gungle finished sixth.
