CALHOUN'S RADIO STATION ON THE AIR IN 2006

(02/02/2006)
Calhoun's new FM radio station could be up and running this year, according to Daniel W. Finch, Jr., the successful bidder for a commercial radio license in the Arnoldsburg area this week.

The FCC web site said Finch, a resident of Braxton County, paid $63,000 for the frequency.

The format for the station is yet to be decided.

Finch said the station would serve Calhoun, Roane and Gilmer counties.

The location of the tower for the 6,000 watt station will be somewhere in the general Arnoldsburg area.

Spencer Newspapers reported Finch is currently the financial officer and office manager for Summit Media Broadcasting in Sutton, owners of The Boss 97 FM Radio in Sutton which broadcasts a 50,000 watt signal that is available in the three counties the new station will serve.

Finch said Summit Media was not involved with the new Calhoun station.

Spencer Newspapers said Star Communications, which operates WVRC FM and AM in Spencer, was a registered bidder for the auction.

Finch filed a complaint with the FCC asking that Star be disqualified because Star reportedly failed to disclose an alleged relationship between Star and another applicant, Anita Kimes, according to Spencer Newspapers.

Finch claimed that the two applicants were in violation of the FCC's anti-collusion rule.

The FCC Web site said the commission opted not to investigate the complaint until after the auction was complete.
