Faustine was of good cheer checking-out at Grantsville's Foodland
Last week we were taking photos of local folks to represent community life during this Christmas season, and we stopped at Foodland, Grantsville's only grocery store, to chat with Faustine Duskey McCartney (left) and clerk Bonnie Lemley (right).
Faustine said "I've had lots of burdens, but I just keep going. I still really like Christmas," validated by the large number of holiday lights around her home each year.
Faustine was once a resident of the backwoods down on Rowell's Run at Cremo, not far from the Village of Hur. Her folks ran the general store and post office.
Faustine served for several years (representing Center District) on the Democratic Executive Committee, and more recently had been a caregiver to her husband, Rex, one of Grantsville's old-time police chiefs. She operated her continuous yard sale on Phillips Run.
"Make me look good on the Hur Herald," she said, saying she now has her own computer and is online.
Unfortunately, Faustine didn't get to see her picture.
She became seriously ill Monday afternoon and "coded" at her residence, then to be revived by Calhoun EMS and life-flighted to Morgantown, where she passed away.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
