MISSISSIPPI SENDS PRAYER QUILT TO CALHOUN CITIZENS - "What A Difference Your Gifts Made"

(12/14/2005)

PRAYER QUILT to the citizens of Calhoun County from Ellisville, Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina - "When you pray, tie a knot in the strings of the quilt. Your prayer may be specific or general. It may be a prayer of intercession for someone else, a request for help, an expression of gratitude, or a simple need to be held in the presence of God. It may not even be a prayer you know how to put in words. God will understand the need."

A prayer quilt was sent from the community of Ellisville, Mississippi to the folks of Calhoun County who reached out to them with food, supplies and money after they were struck by Hurricane Katrina.

Rev. Susan Woodard, pastor of Ellisville United Methodist Church, said through the efforts of Calhoun citizens and others they were able to stock about 20 churches and organizations in the area with disaster supplies.

The Calhoun Commission organized the relief effort to Mississippi, taking a truck and a van of food and supplies directly to the rural community.

"Calhoun people were more than generous," said Commission President Larry McCallister, including the donation of money.

"We estimate we were able to help about 20,000 people during those critical weeks," said Rev. Woodard.

"You will never fully know what a difference your gifts made," she said.

"When you pray, tie a knot in the strings of the quilt."

She said she hopes a place will be designated in the community to hang the prayer quilt.

"That way the quilt can serve as a visible and ongoing reminder of the prayers offered and the strength of the larger community of those called by Christ to respond to those in need," Woodard concluded.
