A lawsuit filed by a woman against her employer after her scalp allegedly was ripped from her head has been settled.
The terms of the settlement between Melissa May and her daughter and Spencer Veneer and its parent companies were sealed in an order signed last week by Roane Circuit Judge David Nibert.
May, represented by Huntington attorney David Duffield, alleged her scalp was torn from her head in September 2002 when her hair became entangled in a shaft on a log slicer.
When co-workers tried to activate an emergency shut-off it failed to work, the suit claimed. The shaft ripped her hair, scalp, ears and a large portion of skin at the base of her neck from her body, the suit claims. She underwent numerous surgeries and was hospitalized for weeks following the incident.
Spencer Veneer, represented by the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, denied allegations in the suit that the protective guard was put back on the machine and the emergency shut-off switch was re-connected after the accident and before OSHA inspectors arrived.
