Luther E. Atkinson, 84, passed away November 25, 2005, when he left his earthly home to go to his eternal life in heaven, after an extended illness.
Born in Spencer, West Virginia on February 11, 1921, he was an area resident all of his life. Luther was a Veteran of WWII, with service in Bismarck, Archipelago, New Guinea, and Southern Philippines, Ryukyus. He was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, Philippine Libertarian Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jean Carpenter Atkinson; his parents, George W. and Viney Atkinson; sisters, Letha Ann Hodapp, Nora Carpenter, and Susie Carpenter; brothers, Homer "Bill" Atkinson, Kester "Runt" Atkinson, Todd Atkinson, Raymond Atkinson, Ralph Richard Atkinson, and Henry John Atkinson.
He is survived by his children, Viney Hall (Garrie) of Spencer, Bettie Atkinson of Medina, Ohio, Connie Heeter (Bill) of Spencer, Ruby Pfouts (Merle) of Jewett, Ohio, Raymond Dale "Bim" Atkinson (Judy) of Arnoldsburg, and Luther W. "Sug" Atkinson (Natalie) of Arnoldsburg.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Carla Snyder, Raquel Schroer, Adam Mace, Corey Mace, Ray Atkinson II, Melissa Holcomb, Lisa Atkinson; 17 great grandchildren; one brother, Hugh Atkinson (Janice) of Spencer; and one half-sister, Georgia Faye Atkinson.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 29 at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Rev. James O. Epling will officiate. Calling hours will be from noon until the time of the services. Interment will be in the Atkinson Cemetery, Beech Road, Arnoldsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skilled Nursing Services, Roane General Hospital, Spencer, WV.
