Calhoun High's dance classes have completed a unit on theatrical dance, according to instructor Bev Morford.
The students were placed in groups with props and music was provided. Each group designed a creative dance that was practiced and the performed on stage in the school auditorium.
Morford's Dance II students entertained the class with a Chinese Ribbon Dance. Students learned basic ribbon moves and then constructed a dance that correlated with ribbon skills.
Students were exposed to the dance culture from China and then shared that knowledge with the class. They performed to a musical piece "Honor To Us All."
Members of one of the performing groups were Caitlin Weaver, Rebecca Bowman, Jessica Browning, Jessica Moles, Teresa Little and Roxanne Renfrow.
Justin Ramsey, Tyler Schartiger, Jason Cunningham, David Lee and Larry Wease created a dance in tribute to the USA, with top hats, canes, and bow ties. The hats and ties were trimmed in red, white and blue. They performed to "You're a Grand Old Flag."
Kendra Curry, Ashley Miller, Kalah Krugman-Bailey, and Mary Starcher's performance was based on comedy entertainment. They used routine with mops and buckets. Their dance number was inspired by the song "9 to 5," performed by Dolly Parton.
The final group did a tribute to the dance era of the 1950's by wearing poodle skits. Christie White, Christa Kight, Jenna Wade and Tiffany Jarvis learned that the music and dances were peppy and required stamina to perform. They created their dance to the song "Let's Go to the Hop."
Many of the students will be participating in the Fine Arts Performance that will be presented December 15 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.
Along with Morford's dance class, the choir and theatre classes, under the direction of Mrs. Chambers, the art classes under the direction of Mrs. Moellendick, will be represented during the special performance.
