A research study is being conducted through Marshall University and Ohio State University looking at the perceptions of Appalachian adolescents and their parents toward health, obesity, and consuming a healthy diet.
Kelli Williams, a faculty member in the Department of Dietetics at Marshall University, visited Bev Morford's health classes on October 27 to discuss the importance of the health study.
Williams addressed the issue concerning adolescent obesity reaching epidemic magnitude throughout the country.
In West Virginia, overweight among youth is a minimally researched problem of great concern.
Studies have indicated that West Virginia adolescents consume a diet inconsistent with national guidelines.
In order for successful nutrition programs to be designed for West Virginia adolescents, it is vitally important to learn how a healthy diet is perceived.
Information gained will be utilized to design appropriate nutrition interventions throughout the state and region.
The students were given information sheets and application forms.
Those who agree to participate must have application forms returned by November 3. Only 12-16 student/parent pairs will be selected for participation in the study. Random selection will be done to choose participants if more apply.
Participants will meet at CM-HS to take part in a focus group interview process and to complete a questionnaire.
The entire meeting should not last longer than three hours. A snack-meal will be provided and a stipend of $50 to each parent and $20 to each student will be awarded at the end of the session.
