REGIONAL JAIL DIRECTOR SAYS HE WANTS TO HELP WIRT - Time To Adjust Budget

(06/23/2001)
Elizabeth-AP The director of the Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority says he wants to help Wirt County stay in the black when a new regional jail opens.

The county's budget is only 500-thousand dollars. With the regional jail bill, the county will be about 110-thousand dollars in debt at the end of the year. Authority director Steve Canterbury says he understands the county's predicament.

Canterbury says he told county officials they could pay whatever they believe they can afford. After two years, the authority would assess Wirt County's situation.

Canterbury says the deal would give the county time to adjust its budget to reflect the costs of using the new jail in Doddridge County.

County commissioners say they're hoping to receive budget digest money from the Legislature to help.

State Senator Donna Boley has told county officials they may receive about 70-thousand dollars from the state.
