Barbara D. Smith, RPh, CDE, of Spencer was recently presented the "Roche Education Award" by the West Virginia Society
of Health Systems Pharmacists (WVSHP) during their annual meeting held April 6-7, 2001, in Charleston, West Virginia.
Barbara received a beautiful wooden plaque inscribed with the following:

Criteria for the award includes that the individual demonstrate dedication to health care professions by commitment to
education. This may be demonstrated by precepting students, residents, presentations to professional organizations, classroom
or workshop instruction, participation in continuing education through institution or any other activity which assists in the
education of others.
Barbara has given numerous presentations on various topics to school and civic organizations, health care professionals and
professional organizations. She is involved in educating the community, health care professionals and health care professions
students about various disease states such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and osteoporosis. She has been successful in
obtaining grant funding to partially support her educational endeavors.
Barbara has been an Adjunct Instructor for the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Pharmacy since 1992 and recently
was promoted by the WVU Department of Clinical Pharmacy to the level of Adjunct Assistant Professor for the WVU School
of Pharmacy. She is also a pharmacy field professor for the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership (WVRHEP)-a
WVU-affiliated program training students for rural pharmacy practice-and precepts pharmacy students during their clinical
rotations in Roane County. Having passed a national certification exam in 1995, Barbara earned the designation of Certified
Diabetes Educator (CDE) and is one of only seven pharmacists in West Virginia that hold this certification.
The "Roche Education Award" is one of two awards Barbara has received in less than one year. Last June the West Virginia
Pharmacists Association presented Barbara with the "Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award." The award, which is sponsored
each year by DuPont Pharma pharmaceutical company, is presented to a West Virginia pharmacist "for demonstrating
innovative pharmacy practice by utilizing their therapeutic knowledge and professional skills to promote and assure the health
and wellness of the public."
Barbara is the first community pharmacist to be presented the distinguished "Roche Education Award" by WVSHP. Previous
award recipients practice pharmacy in an institutional (hospital) or clinic setting. Barbara is a graduate of Spencer High School
and the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. She is employed full-time by Staats Pharmacy in Spencer, WV.
