Calhoun's young cross country took another step in the growing process
Thursday with a sixth-place finish in the LKC championship meet held at West
Union.
The Red Devils had 143 points, which was good enough for sixth place behind
champion Ritchie County. Ritchie had 36 narrowly edging host Doddridge
County which had 39.
Calhoun's top finisher was Anna Sampson, one of the Red Devils' "Three
Freshmigos", who had a time of 25:03 for 20th-place.
Another of the "Freshmigos", Maria Kisner, who had a time of 25:13 doe 23rd
place, backed her.
The third "Freshmigo", Elizabeth Duskey, took 31st place with a time of
29:12. She has been fighting a knee problem for the last couple of meets.
Senior Teresa Little rounded out the Red Devils with a time of 32:30 and
34th place.
The Red Devils were running without junior standout Grace Keaffaber who is
out with hip and leg injuries following an auto accident earlier in the
season. Without Keaffaber the Red Devils had to take a "blank" runner that
is placed in the last-place position of the race.
On the boys side junior David Lee was Calhoun's top placer with a time of
23:25. Freshman Dustin Simmons had a time of 32:03.
Ravenswood won the boys team title with 24 points easily outdistancing
runner-up Doddridge which had 57 points.
Earlier in the week the Red Devils competed in the prestigious Doddridge
Middle School Invitational.
On the boys side Steven Keaffaber had a time of 15:13 for 68th place while
Cai Clothier had a time of 17:51.
On the girls side Emily Brady had a time of 19:52.
The season is over for the middle school runners but on the high school side
the Class AA-A Region IV meet is scheduled for next Thursday at Camp Virgil
Tate.
