Calhoun limited the turnovers and unleashed a brutal running attack to
hammer Wahama 28-0 in the Red Devils' homecoming game Friday night to
run their record to 5-1.
With Homecoming Queen Andrea Hardway and her court and several alumni
classes looking on, the Red Devils methodically dismantled a Wahama team
that had played much better than its 2-3 record heading into the game
would indicate.
After avoiding a bullet early in the game - the Red Devils fumbled away
the opening kickoff - Calhoun went to work on the Wahama defense and
moved down the field with a quick-striking offense.
The quickest strike was the last: A 42-yard touchdown run by Paul
Goodrich.
That score came at the nine-minute mark of the first quarter
and gave the Red Devils a lead they would never relinquish.
Calhoun had the chance to tack on more first quarter points but it has
its drive thwarted by a fumble.
Unlike last week's 42-18 loss at
Williamstown, where the Red Devils fumbled the ball six times (losing
five) it was to be the last fumble of the night.
Instead Calhoun kept Wahama out of the end zone and mounted another
drive that ended with Goodrich scoring from nine yards out midway
through the second quarter.
Calhoun added the extra point conversion on
a pass from Matt Houchin to Steve Cunningham making the score 14-0 at
the half.
Cunningham was a key player in the second half with two pass
interceptions stopping Wahama drives, giving ball back to Calhoun's
offense.
The Red Devils changed gears slightly in the second half with Chad
Conley taking on the brunt of the load.
He responded well with two touchdowns and 70 yards rushing after
intermission.
His first touchdown followed a Cunningham interception and was set up by
his 48-yard run, which took the ball to the one. On the next play he
rammed into the end zone and Michael Sullivan kicked the extra point
making it 21-0.
Conley was even more involved in setting up the next touchdown when he
blocked a Wahama kick and recovered the ball at the White Falcons' 12.
Seconds later he was in the end zone with another one-yard score.
Sullivan's extra point set the final score.
Goodrich led Calhoun with 139 yard on 19 carries giving him unofficially
1,102 yards rushing on the season.
He also has 118 points scored on 19
touchdowns (18 offensive and one defensive) and two extra point
conversions.
Conley supported Goodrich with 122 yards of his own on 17 carries. He
now has unofficially 470 rushing on the season.
Overall the Red Devils had 18 first downs and 286 yards total offense.
Calhoun is idle this coming Friday night and returns to action at Roane
County on Oct. 13 in a rare Thursday night game.
