Calhoun County was supposed to host a cross country meet at the Calhoun
County Park Thursday and the weather was perfect for it - crisp and clear.
The meet drew the largest crowd of the season thus far for the Red Devils.
But there was one problem - Calhoun was all alone.
First Gilmer and Roane had to decline the invitation. They did this early
but that still left the Red Devils and Clay County. But sometime Thursday
morning the Clay coach got in touch with Melinda Fitzwater, the Calhoun
coach, and asked out of the meet since Clay had several kids down with the
flu.
That left Calhoun none.
Instead Calhoun held a practice and cooked hot dogs for the team and the
people that showed up.
Fitzwater said, "At least we got to feed them."
The Red Devils will try to get those same four teams together again next
week for a meet at the park.
Fitzwater said she is working on a day when
they all can get together.
If that falls through the Red Devils won't compete until the LKC Meet, which
will be held at Doddridge County. |
