Despite losing its first game of the season Calhoun County still finds
itself in a good position to make the football playoffs for only the second
time in school history.
When the Red Devils suffered a 42-18 setback at Williamstown last Friday
night it dropped all the way from fifth place to a tie for 10th, which is
still good enough to give the Red Devils a spot in the Class A playoffs.
Calhoun is now tied with Tygart's Valley has a rating of 6.40. The top 16
schools make the playoffs in each division.
Calhoun has not been to the playoffs since 1983.
During the Wayne Underwood winning years, the team was kept out of the playoffs because of narrow regulations, but if the criteria used today was used on the Underwood teams, Calhoun would have gone to the state playoffs many times.
Calhoun will try to rebound from its first loss of the season in a
homecoming match up with perennial Class A power Wahama Friday night.
A win
over the White Falcons could put the Red Devils back in the top eight
schools in the rankings. That is important because the top eight schools are
host schools in the first round, providing the school's athletic facilities
meet a certain level of capacity.
The Red Devils' chances of rising in the rankings should they win is
bolstered by a match up of two teams ranked ahead of them when second-ranked
Williamstown travels to fifth-ranked St. Marys.
Following Friday's game the Red Devils have an open date before traveling to
Roane County for the Black Walnut Festival Bowl.
The remainder of the schedule has Calhoun at Wirt and Braxton and home to
St. Marys.
