Research projects which are getting nationwide attention

Natalie White, a Calhoun High graduate and Marshall computer science major, is part of Vandalia Research, Inc.

White is the daughter of David White of Five Forks.

Vandalia is a life sciences research company originally formed in March 2004 as an LLC and based in West Virginia.

Vandalia has placed strong emphasis on research and development directed to specific market needs, with the objective of commercializing novel biotechnology instrumentation and advanced biotechnology manufacturing techniques.

Vandalia's flagship technology is the Triathlon Thermal Cycler. Over the past two years, researchers have developed an innovative system and process (patent pending) for the mass production of specific DNA sequences with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The Triathlon system will ultimately support throughput volumes of six liters per day, suitable for large industrial applications.

This is a huge amount of PCR as compared to the current extraction methods being used.

White said if this technology is adapted and sold on a world wide scale it could result in a billion dollar industry.

Vandalia Research has also been developing forensic lab kits that will be available shortly. It is described on the research site's webpage. White is working on the program, which is called the "Mystery of Lyle and Louise."

When ready. it will available for use in high school programs, like the Criminal Justice Program.
