Roger Miller, the director for Student Services for Roane County schools, has been named the Character Educator of the Year by the state Board of Education.
Miller is the third recipient of the award named for Paul Morris, the longest serving member of the West Virginia Board of Education.
He died in May from cancer.
The award honors those who demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship and caring.
Miller has secured a grant making Roane County one of 23 pilot sites for character education.
He also has created student radio and television messages about the six pillars and has established a county-wide character education cadre.
