A Calhoun man who plead guilty of murder has been sentenced to 40 years for the crime. Christopher D. Cox, who is now 20, has been in Central Regional Jail for over a year since he was charged with murdering Russell Metz, 49, of Arnoldsburg.
He appeared in Calhoun Circuit Court before Judge Thomas Evans III, after entering guilty pleas to charges of 2nd degree murder and 2nd degree robbery.
Evans gave Cox the maximum sentence for each offense, including 5-18 years on the robbery charge.
Cox told the court he had been hooked on methamphetamine while attending Calhoun County High School, where he graduated in 2004.
Prosecutor Matt Minney said the sentences must be served consecutively, which means Cox will serve at least 45 years before he is released.
Cox told Judge Evans he killed Metz by stabbing him with a knife at a camp just off U.S. 119/33, a short distance from the Roane County line.
During testimony, Cox said he then shot Metz in the head with a .22 magnum rifle.
