Calhoun's young cross country team ran into a buzz saw of experience and
talent Tuesday afternoon yet came away with seventh place in the Doddridge
Invitational.
Freshman Anna Sampson led the way for the Red Devils with a 33rd place
finish.
Junior Grace Keaffaber backed her with a 59th place finish.
Freshman Maria Kisner was next at 63rd and Elizabeth Duskey rounded out the
Red Devils Three Freshmigos (Sampson, Kisner and Duskey are all freshmen) in
69th place. Senior Teresa Little came in 77th.
Overall Calhoun had 198 points - 19 better than it scored at the
season-opening Autumn Classic - but most Red Devil runners felt they could
have done better. That's because Calhoun beat Gilmer County in a dual meet
last Tuesday but finish way behind Gilmer's 159 Tuesday.
Sampson had a time of 26:00, which was one of her best times of the season.
Keaffaber was at 29:01, Kisner had a time of 29:28, Duskey was at 29:58 and
Little came in at 33:08.
On the boys side David Lee led the way with a great time of 23:54 but was
well back in the pack behind Ravenswood's powerful 10-man team. Ravenswood
had 9 runners finish in the top 25 and the 10th finished 35th.
Calhoun's other boys runner - Dustin Simmons - had a time of 30:57.
In the middle school meet the Red Devils had only one runner since Cai
Clothier and Emily Brady were both sidelined with injuries. Calhoun's only
runner was Steven Keaffaber, who was 33rd with a time of 13:37 over the
two-mile course. High school runners compete on a 3.5-mile course.
Calhoun returns to action next Tuesday at Cedar Creek State Park.
