KASON'S STORY
Kason Dell Hupp of Grantsville, WV, was born March 16th, 2005, with a condition called Short Bowel Syndrome. His little body had only 6-inches of small intestines. The average person needs 4 to 8-feet to live.
In order to survive, little Kason would need a transplant of the liver, small bowel and pancreas. He remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Charleston Area Medical Center for the first 4 weeks of his life and was placed on the transplant list at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Living day by day, Kason fought⦠and his family never wavered in their courage and faith. On July 21st, prayers were answered as Kason's family received the telephone call they had been waiting for⦠they had a donor and it was a match.
The 7-hour transplant surgery was successful and the Mighty Kason came through it like a trooper. He remained in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for the following 2 weeks and was then moved into a private room. Unfortunately, he had to undergo emergency surgery on August 11th, to remove fluid build-up in his abdomen.
Kason continues to recover from his most recent surgery in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Pittsburgh Children's Hospital. He will remain in the hospital and then in the Pittsburgh area for the next 2 - 3 months before he will be able to return home. He will remain on medication throughout his entire life to avoid his body rejecting his new organs.
Though it has been at times 'touch and go' with Kason's condition, his family has been by his side and he has prevailed. Through the gift of donated organs a little boy's life was saved. The end of Mighty Kason's story has yet to be written. There will be much to add as he has frogs to catch⦠dragon's to slay⦠princesses to rescue⦠games to play⦠and friends to be made.
The wristbands are bright (Calhoun) red with the words "MIGHTY KASON" engraved in them, the cost is $5 each.
Proceeds from the Mighty Kason Wristband Project will help cover the Hupp family's expenses while Kason remains in Pittsburgh.
