State auditors are examining the records of the Gilmer County Sheriff's office, after a customer reportedly complained about how transactions were being handled.
Gilmer County Clerk Beverly Marks said auditors have been at the court house since July looking at the Sheriff's books.
The audit reportedly alleges an amount of $10,000 could be missing.
It covers the fiscal year 2004-05, which has been under the administration of current Sheriff Mickey Metz and former sheriff Gary Rose.
County Clerk Marks said the audit is still being conducted by the state.
Gilmer County Prosecutor Jerry Hough did not return a call, requesting information about the problem.
