The 46th annual Mt. Zion Ox Roast is tomorrow, serving the deep-pit roasted delicacy starting at 11 a.m.
Ox Master David Weaver says he has been to them all, starting when he was carried in his mother's arms. The event used to draw a large number of old-timers who returned to the county and used the event as a homecoming.
While a few still come back, the old crowd has passed on and "ox eaters" are mostly local folks.
Weaver said the park, which was started in 1956 by the Mt. Zion Community Action, is really struggling to survive.
The local Community Action group was responsible for bringing public water to the community, public housing at Calhoun Homes, in addition to the community center.
The good news is the cost of Saturday's meal - only $5. A pit-roasted beef sandwich, tomatoes, cole slaw, baked beans, cake and a drink. What a deal!
You can purchase a sandwich for three bucks.
4-H members and others participate in exhibits
Volunteers help with the food line
Calhoun County 4-H projects will be on display throughout the day, along with County Fair products, like vegetables, fruit, canned goods, craft items, and woodcraft.
Items will be judged and ribbons awarded, with some of them being sold by days end.
The pit-roasted beef, if there is any left, will also be auctioned.
Gospel, country and bluegrass singers, all invited, will be performing throughout the day, starting at 1 p.m.
