Hoy Ferrell suffered a heart attack and passed away.
Several from the Burning Springs M. E. church attended the Methodist picnic, sing, preaching and communion service Sunday at Sportsman's Park in Elizabeth. Rev. Francis' message was well received. As one woman said, "He doesn't use that fancy city talk."
Local residents are looking forward to the Wirt County Fair and of especial interest is the big mud bog scheduled for Saturday evening.
Faith Bingman Reece has been staying with her daughter in California. She has been on the sick list.
Mary Reno reported that Matthew Copen has obtained employment at Simonton Windows where two of Mary's grandchildren, Jeremy and Melissa Ferrell are employed.
John Little was calling at the Charles Russell residence. Charles was having water pump problems and the expert was called in for consultation. John noted that he and a number of lodge members went down to visit Glenn W. Campbell at the Masonic Home. Earlier Glenn had been in the intensive care unit. It seems he is the only man there with all these women and, apparently, being 90 is just not the same as being 19, even for Glenn.
Devin & Shawn Burton and Austin Westfall were among those visiting Brandon Ferrell over the weekend. They also went to the Jackson County Fair.
Anna Engelke and the FunChester group motored to Grove City Pennsylvania for Jim & Misty's wedding. On the way back Anna was rear ended by a jeep when she came to a stop prior to getting on the Pennsylvania turnpike. Anna was not injured but such could not be said for her chariot.
Steven Settles decided to try out the big mud holes down near the mouth of Beaver Dam. He found that he was "out classed" and had to be towed to his mother's house.
Alley Oop and Jeff Westfall were calling on Mr. & Mrs. Carl Ferrell & family.
It was learned that Lora Roberts gave his wife Eula Mae a foxhound on the occasion of her birthday. One might say that he is a real considerate husband who understands that the wife is "almost always" into the foxhound scene.
The Wirt road crew has been mowing grass and weeds along Creston area roads which was a great improvement. Road crews all over the state are in a turmoil over the folks down at the Mouth of the Elk River giving new hires in the 3 eastern panhandle counties a 25% pay hike over workers in the "less important counties". One fellow noted it must have been a plan to increase union membership so Broadway Joe could better fight off Don Blankenship. [Logic that is hard to follow since the ruling oligarchy made the decision.]
Keith Collins is in Germany for two weeks taking a history class on World War II and the German view of that conflict.
Mr. & Mrs. Cleston Nicholas celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Friday by dining at the "Y" at Arnoldsburg. They are regular readers of The Creston News.
The Deaver log cabin was moved last week to the Oil and Gas Park at Burning Springs. Volunteers are now needed to put the cabin back together.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Bish were spending some time at their place in Creston.
Nancy Engelke was consulting her physician. She is doing real well with her therapy.
Eric & Gary Buchanan are participating in a musical at the Actor's Guild in Parkersburg. Gary has also been putting up hay.
The helicopter crop survey crew has been busy in the Creston area. According to press reports they have found and harvested plants in other sections of the county.
The price of local Pennsylvania grade (the best) crude rose to $57 over the weekend although local oil has, on recent occasions, fetched a little more. Most natural gas that is sold at market prices has been fetching about $8/MCF.
It was learned that Carl E. Smith Pipeline purchased a number of wells in Calhoun County, especially on Sycamore. Francis Cain drilled a new well on Sycamore and is now drilling on the Little Kanawha near Brooksville.
Mr. & Mrs. Denver McFarland received one of those "big checks" from a credit card company (one of those papers that continue to make sales boom for shredder companies) but they decided that they had a good use for the dangerous junk mail. They were going on a camping and fishing expedition to Burnsville and needed paper to start campfires (to cook the fish). Thus the "big check" was put to a safe use that would not return to haunt one's credit rating.
A feller called up a local resident wanting to rent a house. The question was asked, "How many children do you have?" There was silence [except for voices of children in the background] and finally he was heard to ask a woman, "How many children do we have?" Such things tend to make one wonder, to say the least.
Verizon, the local baby bell telephone company, has been having work done in the Creston area.
Jane Engelke and Wilbur Schenerlein celebrated their first wedding anniversary in New York City. They attended the Broadway musical Movin' Out with Billy Joel. It seems Jane "dressed" "Scheny" for a "contest" at a famous Gotham eatery and he was declared the winner. Jane said she could "dress anyone to be a winner". Jane's new store grand opening is Thursday August 4th at 10:30 A. M.
Work has started on the Creston Community Building roof.
