Exactly what will happen with the old Calhoun County High School is still not known, according to Hagan Richards.
Richards, who owns the building with his son Dan, said they are in the process of selling the property to the highest eBay bidder, but it may take several weeks for all the legal technicalities to come together.
A Maryland investor is purchasing the property for $160,100.
Richards said he is hopeful that the building will be put to constructive use. "There are indications of that," he said. "But I have yet to be told."
Richards said the eBay auction had about 4,000 hits with twenty bidders making offers above the $85,000 minimum.
The old school has been abandoned since 1998. Efforts to find a use for the structure and its two accompanying buildings have been unsuccessful.
Richards and his son attempted to develop the old stone structure for affordable housing.
After a period of searching for funding and studying the feasibility of the housing project, they concluded the $1 million dollars they would have to invest was not a good investment.
"We really wanted to save the old building, and made every effort we could to make our project work," said Richards.
