ATV DEATHS COULD HIT ALL-TIME RECORDS

(07/20/2005)
West Virginia may break all records for ATV deaths this year, with press accounts indicating over 20 have died so far, although there may be several more.

The increase in deaths is coming after the WV legislature increased safety rules for the vehicles, which manufacturers say are not built to ride on black-top roads.

ATVs are legal on virtually all state roads that do not have a yellow line, and can be ridden on roads with a yellow line on the berm.

Young drivers are required to take a safety course and wear helmets.

Yesterday, 16-year-old Randall Travis Mullins of Harts was operating an ATV near the Logan-Lincoln county line when he collided with a truck. Mullins was pronounced dead on arrival.

On Friday night, 21-year-old Dustin Phillips of Huntington was killed after losing control of an ATV and striking a tree in Wayne County.
