The old Calhoun County High School will likely be sold to the highest bidder in an eBay auction completed Sunday, according to former Calhoun resident Hagan Richards, who jointly owns the structure with his son, Dan, a California real estate developer.
"The highest bid came from a Maryland investor, who has purchased such property before," said Richards. The bid was for $160,100.
Richards said the eBay auction had about 4,000 hits with twenty bidders making offers above the $85,000 minimum.
"During the last five minutes the bidding was hectic," he said.
"We are unaware what intention the winning bidder might have with the building," he said, indicating it will take about two weeks to process the sale.
The old school has been abandoned since 1998. Efforts to find a productive use for the structure and its two accompanying buildings have been unsuccessful.
Richards and his son attempted to develop the old stone structure for affordable housing.
After a period of searching for funding and studying the feasibility of the housing project, they concluded the $1 million dollars they would have to invest was not a good investment.
"We really wanted to save the old building, and made every effort we could to make our project work," said Richards.
