RECORD DEATHS ON ATVS IN WV

(07/07/2005)
West Virginia is well on the way in breaking the record for the number of deaths on ATVs.

An 8-year-old girl died in Jackson County on an all-terrain vehicle driven by her 14-year-old sister.

Neither girl was wearing a helmet.

Dead is Brianna Brewster, a passenger on the Honda four-wheeler, according to Lt. A.J. Boggs of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Brewster's 14-year-old sister was driving the ATV and apparently failed to negotiate a curve, Boggs said. The ATV hit some trees and overturned.

The 14-year-old girl suffered an arm injury and was treated and released. The girls were visiting their mother, who lives nearby, Boggs said.

Newspaper accounts indicate 15 people have died already this year as a result of ATV accidents in the state.
