Â
The Mary Helen Hartshorn 4-H Scholarship to return to the 2006 Calhoun County 4-H Camp in the amount of Full Scholarship,  was awarded to Caitlin Weaver and Cory Roberts. Â
Â
I was honored to present the scholarship on behalf of the Hartshorn family. Mary Helen was one of the first people I met when I moved to Calhoun County. She was working in the WVU County Extension Office as a Nutrition Aide and I found myself as her supervisor. She took the "green" Extension Agent under her wing and taught me many things. I have many humorous stories concerning our days of working together.
Â
Mary Helen was the daughter of Ernest and Stella Wolfe and the wife of Ernest Hartshorn. She placed a great value onÂ
4-H and knew the importance of youth belonging to such an organization. She was a 4-H leader in the county as well as a well known civic leader in many community groups. Â
Â
Although Mary Helen, at the age of 73, passed away on June 21, 2002, she leaves a living legacy in the lives of her children, Sharon, Kathy, and Kelley. The 4-H spirit lives on in the deeds and accomplishments of Kelley, the Program Director of Calhoun County 4-H camp; of Matt, Chief of the Mingo Tribe; of Zach, a 4-H Pin-wearer and past Seneca Chief; and of Ashley, a 4-H'er moving into leadership roles.
Â
The Hur Herald says "Mary Helen was known as a caring and compassionate lady who helped numerous people when help was needed." Such a statement could not be more true. Therefore, it is with honor and a love for 4-H that this scholarship is awarded to outstanding 4-H'ers Caitlin Weaver and Cory Roberts. May the fires of 4-H always burn brightly in the hearts of Calhoun County youth.
