CALHOUN HERO BERNARD P. BELL
Plaque in Bell's honor placed at Big Bend's Army Reserve Center
By Bob Weaver 2001
The efforts to recognize Calhoun native Bernard Pious Bell, the county's only Medal of Honor recipient and one of few from the State of West Virginia, have been slow.
Grantsville's VFW, it's numbers small, has been trying to get the Army Reserve Center at Big Bend named in his honor.
The military and politicians have indicated they would like to do that, but countless efforts appear to have failed.
Some months ago, the government did erect plaques in his honor at the front entrance of the armory.
