A night of honor and celebration

Sixty-nine seniors were members of the 2005 graduating class last night at the 81st Calhoun County High School commencement.

The commencement is among the events with the largest attendance in Calhoun County.

Three students tied for class Valedictorian, Jason Poling, Cynthia Wildfire and Phillip Andrew Prusack. All gave brief addresses to their classmates, in addition to Salutatorian Eli Walker.

Principal Mike Offutt recognized students receiving scholarships, saying this year's graduates received $688,279 in scholarship funds.

Offutt presented the President's Education Awards, this year given to Brittney Hickel, Amanda Lay, Walter Mace, Jason Poling, Phillip Andrew Prusack, Eli Walker and Cynthia Wildfire.

Eli Walker, who will be attending Glenville State College, received the largest amount of scholarship funds, totaling $192,214, including a Glenville State College Scholarship $1400 per year - $5800; Davis & Elkins College $14,285 per year - $57,140; Alderson Broaddus - $15,688 per year - $62,572; Marietta College 15,569 per year - $62,276; Promise Scholarship $3,276; Trader's Bank $500; Hickman Scholarship $500; Calhoun Banks Salutatorian Scholarship $150.

Cynthia Wildfire, who will be attending Amherst College, was the second largest recipient of scholarship funding at $157.080, including an Amherst College Scholarship, $36,720 per year - $146,880; Pell Grant $3,800; Federal Supplemental Ed Op Grant $2,000; Work Study $1,700; W.P. Black Scholarship $1000; Robert C. Byrd Scholarship $1,500; Calhoun Banks Valedictorian Scholarship $200. Total $157,080

The school choir and the CM-HS band gave musical performances, with a video featuring memories of the Class of 2005.
