Prom Night in Sunny Cal, not unlike the bigger world, was a display of fresh young faces and breathtaking fashion.
Here in the country, it's a stirring evening unlikely experienced at any other time in the local "social scene."
Taffeta, tuxedos, and tulle - fancy dresses and off-beat costumes - pinned with corsages and boutonnières, the prom goers marched down the long red carpet to the entrance to Calhoun Middle-High School.
For many of the kids, some arriving in limos, the aim was to look as glamorous and sophisticated as possible.
The commons area of the school was elegantly decorated, possibly the best ever.
Mostly, Prom Night is a right of passage, a signal that mandatory school days are over and the world is waiting.
Now, it's Graduation Night, Friday evening.
