Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Inc., will present a free educational seminar program called You Don't Need Another Stroke to inform patients and caregivers about how to help protect against a future stroke.

The seminar will be Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m. in the Education Room at MHHCC. Educational materials, refreshments and door prizes will be distributed.

The seminar is designed to provide stroke patients with information to help them become effective partners in their own recovery.

According to the American Heart Association, there are approximately 4.8 million stroke survivors in the United States today. People who have had a stroke face a nine times greater risk of having another stroke, and a two times greater risk of having a heart attack versus the general population.

The seminar includes an educational video featuring Mark Alberts, M.D., Professor of Neurology and Director of the Stroke Program at Northwestern University Medical School and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

In the video, Dr. Alberts addresses: The definition and causes of strokes; Why an individual is at an increased risk of having a future stroke or heart attack; Lifestyle changes that a patient can make after experiencing a stroke; The importance of appropriate medications and how they work.

The seminar was developed by the Bristol-Myers Squibb/Sanofi Pharmaceuticals Partnership.
