(05/13/2005)

GSC grads honored (L to R) Kenny Jones,
Melody Downs, Darlene LaMont and Casey Harris

A reception was held last night at Glenville State College president's home to recognize honor graduates in the 2005 class.

Those being honored from Calhoun County include, Kenny Jones, Melody Downs, Darlene LaMont and Casey Harris.

Governor Joe Manchin will deliver the keynote address at the 131st Commencement ceremony at Glenville State College tomorrow.

A native of Marion County, Manchin is currently serving as the 34th Governor of the State of West Virginia.

As a member of the West Virginia Legislature from 1982-1996, Governor Manchin earned a reputation for standing up for West Virginians to improve schools, protect veterans and senior citizens and create jobs. Under his leadership as Secretary of State from 2000-2004, the office became known for providing excellent customer service.

In addition, its SHARES program promoted democracy to all schoolchildren and registered 42,000 high school students to vote. Subsequently, the 2004 General Election saw the highest number of West Virginians cast a vote since 1972.

As a graduate of West Virginia University, businessman and political leader, Governor Manchin understands the importance and value of higher education. In his State of the State Address in January, Governor Manchin stressed the essential role that higher education must play in creating new jobs and generating economic development in the Mountain State.

Governor Manchin followed up on his words with decisive action during the 2005 legislative session: the Governor's higher education flexibility bill was approved overwhelmingly by the Legislature and is getting national attention as a model for other states to consider.

By strengthening the creative and entrepreneurial capacity of our state's universities and colleges, Governor Manchin is harnessing the power of higher education to improve the lives of all West Virginians.

During the Commencement ceremony, GSC Emeriti Professors and Presidential Citations will be recognized, as well as the Outstanding Faculty member and the Student Leadership awardee. The GSC Class of 1955 will also be honored as 50-year graduates.

The Commencement ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Jesse R. Lilly, Jr. Gymnasium on the College campus. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony for all graduates and their families and friends on the Clark Hall Lawn.
