STROUP LISTED IN SERIOUS CONDITION

(05/02/2005)
A Charleston General Hospital spokesperson said Barnes Run resident Melva Stroup remains in serious condition Sunday night after suffering trauma in a car accident in Jackson County Saturday.

Stroup suffered a severe laceration to her neck, which has caused complicated problems related to her treatment.

Sources said while her condition is described as "very serious," she has been minimally responsive to family members and visitors.

Family members reported that a car went left of center to avoid rear-ending another vehicle and crashed into the Stroup vehicle, which was reportedly driven by Chuck Stroup, her son. The Stroup vehicle, after impact, reportedly went over an embankment and landed against a fence. Chuck Stroup suffered injuries, but is reportedly not in serious condition.

Melva Stroup underwent emergency surgery Saturday night.

Melva Stroup has been a longtime, stalwart member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church. Melva and her late husband Charlie retired to the community about 25 years ago, after he served with the Akron Fire Department.

Pastor Rick Swearingen has been in Charleston, indicating the church and family members are requesting prayer.
