Velma Blanch Kerby, 88, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Care Haven Nursing Home, Belmont,
WV.
She was born in Calhoun County to the late Slaithiel Charles carpenter and Scottie Viola Smith
Carpenter, December 26, 1912. Velma was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church,
Hur, WV. In her younger years she enjoyed raising her garden, canning and freezing the
harvest. Anyone passing by Velma and Orval's home on Barnes' Run could see that she loved
growing flowers. Another great joy to her was making quilts for her grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
Velma is survived by her daughter, Mildred Ruth Hall and her husband Harold B. Hall of
Hartville, Ohio, son, Millard Gene Kerby of Pennsboro, WV, sisters, Ermal Starcher of
Northfield, Ohio and Mildred Denning of Bellsville, Michigan, half-sisters, Eloise Nichols,
Barbara Nichols, Bessie Merrill, Daisy Yoak and Linda Kincaid, half-brother, Victor Leon
Carpenter and sister-in-law, Martha Leverna Miller of Bartow, Florida. Also surviving are seven
grandchildren , fifteen great grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and
nephews.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Orval, son, Donald ray, daughter, Helen Marie
and daughter-in-law, Martha Marie Kerby, sisters, Elma Conley and Geraldine Carpenter,
brother, Harry Glen Carpenter, step-mother, Audra Carpenter, half-brothers, Gene and Kenny
and half-sisters, Diane and Carolyn.
Funeral services will be held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, WV, Thursday, May 31,
2001 at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Rick Swearingen will officiate. Interment will be in the Mt. Olive
Cemetery, Hur, WV. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
