Some WV hunters have a hard time telling a turkey from a hunter.
Four days into the state's turkey season, four hunters have been shot, one fatally.
The fatal shooting occurred Thursday morning in the King Knob area of Monongalia County.
Thirty-eight-year-old Randall Hawkins and 36-year-old Robert Thompson Junior, both of Morgantown, were hit by the same 12-gauge shotgun blast in Monongalia County.
Hawkins died of chest wounds.
Thompson was treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for injuries to his head and hand and was released.
The Department of Natural Resources says the shooter, identified as 33-year-old Curtis Wayne Davis Junior of Morgantown, will be charged with negligent shooting.
On Monday, 46-year-old William Martin of Smoot was struck by a shotgun blast in Greenbrier County, and 25-year-old Jerry Hipp of Charles Town was wounded in Jefferson County the following day.
The shooters in both those incidents also face charges of negligent shooting.
West Virginia turkey hunters are difficult to spot in the woods because they dress in all camouflage. They're not required to wear blaze orange because turkeys can see color. |
