Vernon R. McClain, 89, of Newton, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after an extended illness.
He was born April 29, 1915, at Big Otter, Clay County, a son of the late Randolph Middleton and Stella Ann Snodgrass McClain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Marie Ferrebee, Lula Tawney, Evis Hargus, Cora Morris, Beatrice Drake and Annie Hicks; three brothers, Robert McClain, John McClain and Frank McClain.
Vernon was a former school bus driver, with 12 years of service, for the Roane County Board of Education. He was a retired employee of Vecellio & Grogan, Beckley. He was a Baptist and a musician.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Maxine Morris McClain of Newton; two sons, Robert Leo McClain and Roger Lee McClain both of Newton; one granddaughter, Tamara Cook of Spencer; one sister, Norma Gray of Ivydale; one brother, Victor McClain of Dixie; three grandsons, Scott McClain of Looneyville, Geary McClain of Asheville, NC and Jamie McClain of Norfolk, VA; four great grandchildren, Justin Cook, Jonathan Cook, Brittany McClain and Emily McClain.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. J. Herbert Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Harold Cemetery, Uler.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.
