North Iredell High School's Kevin Robinson has accepted an
appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London , Connecticut.
Robinson, an Eagle Scout and three sport letterman at North Iredell, is
ranked in the top 20 in his high school class, and was a state finalist
for
Wendy's High School Heisman Award in 2004.
"I am extremely pleased to be headed to Coast Guard, " Robinson said. "I
went to their summer program for rising seniors last summer and loved it.
I
am interested in engineering, I wanted to wrestle and I was interested in
going to a smaller school. The Coast Guard Academy is unique in that it
had it all."
Robinson is the Grandson of Edna Robinson of Pleasant Hill, and Great
Grandson of Elias and Ollie Yoak.
Among the nation's most prestigious and selective institutions of higher
learning, the Coast Guard Academy is an academic and military community
educating leaders for America. Acceptance to the academy is based on an
evaluation of leadership potential, academic aptitude and athletic
ability.
Unlike the other federal service Academies, there are no Congressional
nominations required, state quotas or special categories. Only about 300
cadets report for "Swab Summer" in July. Cadets undergo a year-round
regimen that ties together education, training and adjustment to military
life.
Robinson, who received appointments to West Point, Coast Guard and the
Naval Academy, hopes to wrestle for the Bears under Coach Steve Eldridge.
Coach Eldridge is in his 39th season with the Bears, and was inducted into
the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995.
Robinson, who had a perfect 38-0 regular season record in 2004-5, ended up
with a career record of 125-31, good for fourth on North Iredell's
all-time
win list. He was also the starting quarterback for the Raiders in 2004,
and is a multi-event competitor on the track team. In addition, Robinson
was a co-founder of the school's sailing club and Fellowship of Christian
Athletes chapter.
