Selections Made For ORISE Programs
Two teachers and four students from Calhoun County High School have been selected to participate in two separate programs managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Pam Bartlett and Dan Fiedorczyk have been selected for the Appalachian Regional Commission's Summer Math/Science/Technology Teacher Leadership Institute at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This appointment is awarded in recognition of their teaching excellence and interest in math and science. The appointment is offered for the period beginning July 7, 2001 and ending on July 20, 2001. The program is administered by ORISE through an interagency agreement between the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
Ms. Bartlett and Mr. Fiedorczyk have the opportunity to do laboratory research in the areas of botany, robotics, or web page design. They also have the opportunity to travel throughout Tennessee and enjoy areas of interest.
Both are veteran teachers. Ms. Bartlett has taught in Calhoun County for 25 years and Mr. Fiedorczyk has taught for 19 years.
David Albaugh, James Bailey, Deva Murphy, and Erin Smith have been accepted to participate in the ARC's Summer Science Honors Academy (SSHA) at ORNL. ARC and ORNL work collaboratively to provide this two-week hands-on science for talented students form the ARC Region (from Mississippi to New York). Their appointment is awarded in recognition for their academic potential and interest in science and is offered from July 7 to July 20.
The goal is for the students to have an opportunity to participate in laboratory research, applying the tools and methods used in ongoing ORNL projects. At the end of the two weeks, the students are given the opportunity to make a presentation about their research experience.
Also built into both programs are opportunities to learn more about the Appalachian Region in which they live.
David is the son of Stephen and Sally Albaugh of Stumptown. James is the son of Ronald Bailey of Arnoldsburg and Dorene Doolittle of Creston. Deva is the daughter of Jimmy Dean and Debbie Jean Murphy of Grantsville. Erin is the daughter of Keith and Loretta Smith of Grantsville and Donna Conrad of Flatwoods.
