The Calhoun High School Theatre class attended the play "Color Me Dark: The Great Migration North" at the Clay Center in Charleston.
The play is by award-winning author Patricia McKissack, author of the "Dear America" series.
Set in the deep south in the 1920's, African-American families are still subject to fierce prejudice from their neighbors as they try to forge a formidable new life.
The Love family encounters many injustices while in Tennessee and tries to escape the problems by migrating north to Chicago, the hub of the Midwest, but encounter similar if not more severe circumstances there.
The Love family discovers that their strength to overcome adversity lies within the moral fabric of their family.
The play was presented by actors from the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
