In movies the ending is always that David rises up and smites Goliath and
all is good.
Thursday night there was no movie ending for Calhoun.
While the Red Devils made it interesting for a while Parkersburg Catholic,
the state's top-ranked Class A school, slowly pulled away for a 61-37
victory in the Region 4 championship game earning a berth in the state
tournament.
Calhoun actually led for a while early in the game but once the Crusaders
grabbed the lead they never looked back.
Parkersburg Catholic took a 17-11 first quarter lead and widened it in the
second quarter when Calhoun came out ice cold and bubble fingered. By the
time the smoke had cleared away the Crusaders were on top by 11, 29-18, and
it was still something of a game.
But in the third quarter it all caught up with Calhoun.
After a quick burst cut the lead to near single digits the air went out of
the Red Devils' balloon and PCHS methodically pulled away leading 49-32
after three periods.
The fourth quarter was more of the same with PCHS setting the final mark at
24 points, 61-37.
Parkersburg Catholic is now 18-6.
Calhoun, which was led by Tristan Harris' 16 points, finishes its season at
9-15.
Calhoun also got nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocks from
all-state candidate Jake Perkins while Chad Conley added five, Tommy Gerwig
four and Mike Batten three.
Tyler Shartiger, Matt Houchin and Steve
Cunningham all played but did not score.
