CALHOUN MAN FEARED DEAD - Calvin Boatright Missing Five Days

(03/07/2005)
Today is day five for a missing Calhoun man.

Family friends fear Calvin Boatright, 79, may be dead, or if he is alive he is in dire straights.

Calhoun Sheriff Carl Ballengee says a search of the Sassafras Ridge Road where Mr. Boatright lived has turned up nothing.

"The immediate area has been closely covered by 4-wheelers and cars," Ballengee said.

Boatright, a bachelor, retired from the US Army and is listed as a veteran of World War II. He has lived on Sassafras Ridge off U. S. 33-119 for several years.

Boatright's friends say he had been living by himself and was suffering from what appeared to be Alzheimer's Disease, blind in one eye and partially blind in the other.

He had not been driving for at least a couple months, let alone after dark because of his vision.

Longtime friend Mitchell Stump is asking Calhoun residents to help with the search. "I spent most of yesterday driving up and down the country roads," he said.

A neighbor talked with the elderly man Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Boatright told him he was about ready to "eat my supper," but the neighbor said he was gone the next morning, his supper untouched.

He left in a dark blue 1992 Ford F-150 pick-up truck with a primer black left front fender and a black door, WV license plate number 2B5033. He is believed to have his Norwegian dog with him.

Neighbors said the elderly man locked his house and garage before he left, something he always did.

There is some evidence that he drove toward US 33-119 at Sand Ridge, and could have gone toward Glenville or Spencer, although he could have dropped off into Big Run and drove to Russett.

"There have been cases where people have been missing like this and drove to other states, and then found," said Sheriff Ballengee.

Mr. Boatright is described as 5' 10" tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds.

If anyone has seen Mr. Boatright or his vehicle, please call Calhoun 911 to advise Sheriff Carl Ballengee.
