Facing the sale of the Minnora Community Center property to the Calhoun County Committee on Aging by the Calhoun Commission, a meeting has been scheduled tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The commission has already approved the sale for $50,000, but it would have to be further approved by the Building Authority.
CCCOA Director Mike Ritchie and Calhoun Commissioner Rick Sampson will attend the meeting to answer questions.
"We are asking for Community support
concerning the future of the Center. There is a possibility of the
entire Center being sold," said President Kenny Bailey.
"Please attend, show your support, and give your input into the situation," he said.
Bailey contends the center was not notified of the sale, an issue which is in dispute.
The Minnora Community Center terminated their long-term lease from the County Commission when they had trouble paying their liability insurance.
The commission took the property back with intentions of paying the insurance, but now the commission is facing ever-rising insurance costs and having problems paying bills.
The CCCOA is already building a new senior center on part of the property to serve seniors in the area. Ritchie has said he will work with the community to provide services.
Bailey said local residents should attend the meeting if:
1. You are using the exercise room and weight room Monday through Friday.
2. You attend aerobics classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
3. You play basketball on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
4. You attend the scrap booking classes.
5. You attend the flea markets and farmer's markets.
6. You attend the 4-H meetings held there.
7. You hold/attend birthday parties, reunions, and other functions in
various rooms.
8. You attend the wrestling matches held in the gym.
9. You attend the parties and dances, etc. held there.
10. You attend the Haunted House during Halloween.
11. You vote there.
12. Most of all, if you live in the area, you are really needed.
The agenda will include: sign in sheet, call to order, reading of the
minutes, approval of the minutes, announcements of the newly elected
officers, old business, including thanking all those who took their
valuable time tearing down old acoustical foam on the walls, new
business (sale of the center).
A work day for the gym has been scheduled for
Saturday, March 12 beginning at 10 a.m.
"We need special
manpower in order to help put scaffolding up in the gym so lights and
heat can be worked on," said Bailey.
