A two-vehicle collision at Letherbark on US 33-119 west of Arnoldsburg turned deadly Saturday morning, the driver of a car was reportedly dead at the scene. His passenger, described as a pregnant female, was seriously injured and is being air-lifted to Charleston Area Medical Center by HealthNet.

The deceased driver lived for a short period of time following the accident, but coded while being given treatment and could not be revived.

The male driver of the second vehicle, a pick-up truck, was reported to be in critical condition. He is also being taken to CAMC by a second HealthNet chopper.

The truck was traveling west toward Spencer and the car was traveling east toward Arnoldsburg.

Emergency workers called the injuries "Critical trauma."

State Trooper 1st Class Jeff Hunt said the name of the victim and the injured parties are being withheld until family members are notified.

"This is one of the worst crash scenes I have seen in a long time," said a volunteer fireman from Arnoldsburg. The victims had to be extracted from the tangled metal.

The Arnoldsburg VFD extracted the victims from an Oldsmobile 88, where the driver was dead, and the Spencer-Roane VFD extracted the injured male from a Ford F-150.

Calhoun, Minnie Hamilton Health Care and Roane County EMS dispatched ambulances to the scene. The Arnoldsburg and Spencer-Roane VFD's also responded.
