Measures are continuing to pull Calhoun County back to the black.
Following benefit cuts, employee layoffs and other actions, the Calhoun Commission is proposing to increase the valuation of county property - all classes of wooded property in all districts of the county, except property classified for farm use.
The commission voted unanimously Monday to increase valuations to $100 per acre, and $120 per acre on all managed timberland.
Commissioners said the increases are solely directed toward relieving the current financial crisis, paying bills and providing essential services - putting the county in the black.
The public can comment on the proposed increase on February 28 at 9 a.m.
That would be a 57 cent increase per acre on Class II property and $1.14 increase per acre for Class III.
The increase for managed timberlands is $1.33 per acre.
A recent study of property sales in the county showed that property is being sold 25% to over 200% higher than the current appraised value.
