Calhoun native Dr. Benjamin H. Bailey, 79, of Morgantown, has died.
The WVU professor, formerly of Minnora, passed away January 19, 2005, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Bailey graduated from Spencer High School in 1944. He attended Glenville State College, Glenville, WV, and obtained his Bachelor's degree in 1948. Following graduation he taught in Wyoming County Schools at Glen Rogers and Oceana.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves for 33 years. After the Korean War, Dr. Bailey attended the University of Florida at Gainsville, Florida, and received his Masters Degree and Doctorate Degree in Education Psychology while teaching in public schools.
Dr. Bailey joined the faculty of WVU in 1959 and retired as Emeritus Professor in 1996. He served as Chairman of the Department of Educational Psychology for 10 years. He had served on the Committee of Retired Faculty since his retirement.
Dr. Bailey had a second career with the U.S. Army Reserves. He obtained a Masters Degree in Military Science from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and taught many summers in the Defense Intelligence School at Fort Bragg, N.C.
He was the Commander of the 416th MI detachment in Morgantown, for 11 years and the 470th Unit for four years. He retired as a colonel and received the Legion of Merit for his service in 1981.
Dr. Bailey had served as a Presidents Ambassador for Glenville State College, his Alma Mater, for a number of years.
A lifelong Democrat, he was active in state politics having worked on campaigns for John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV and James Sprouse during their campaigns for governor of West Virginia. He was a lifelong member of ROA, VFW, GSC Alumni, a member of PHI DELTA KAPPA Education Honorary and the Morgantown Lions Club.
Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 32 years, Betty Miric Bailey and a brother, W. Scott Bailey, of Minnora, WV.
He also is survived by numerous nephews and nieces, and great-nephews and nieces. Special nephews; Joesph M. Park, GSC Student, Eric J. Nodurft of Wheeling, WV, Michael S. Groves of Athens, Ohio, Frank J. Zeroski of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, and special niece Angela Zeroski Rose of Taylor Mill, KY.
He was a Methodist by faith and a former member of Drummond Methodist Church.
He was born on August 4, 1925, in Minnora, WV, in Calhoun County, the son of the late Chloe Bailey.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Cora Alice Bailey, and two nephews and a niece.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Jones of Mather Christian Church, Mather, PA., at Dering's Funeral Home in Morgantown. Burial followed in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
