There used to be a show on ABC called the Wide World of Sports. Part of the
opening talked about the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat."
For the Calhoun Middle School girls basketball teams it has been a season of
the "agony of defeat" as both the A and B teams both rolled out to 0-8
starts.
Monday night the B team broke through with the first win of the season with
a 21-18 victory on the road at Geary Middle School.
Calhoun jumped on top early and was able to hold on to get the win.
The Red Devils took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and held and 8-7 lead
at halftime. The game was still very close at the end of the third quarter
with the Red Devils clinging to a 14-23 lead. Calhoun made a run and took
its biggest lead of the night 19-12 before Geary battled back to set the
final score.
Amara Yoak led Calhoun with 11 while Danielle Little added eight and Heaven
Cain two.
The A team, unfortunately, is still seeking that "thrill of victory" after
losing to Geary 44-17.
Kayla Roberts led the A team with six while Emily Brady and Kristin
Ballengee added four each. Cain had two and Karissa Reip one to tound out
the scoring.
Calhoun plays at home against Clay County tonight before traveling to Wirt
County on Wednesday and Walton on Thursday.
