Winter has set in for a while with zero weather and snow. While other areas had closed roads and schools and wrecks all over the highway the only problem locally was when the rain fell and turned to ice on everything. That lasted for about two hours Saturday morning at Creston.

The local road crews got roads back in shape in a little while and all Wirt roads are ready for school to resume on Monday although such is not the case elsewhere.

Perhaps because of the freezing rain there was no mail delivery Saturday to local post offices. Although there is a delivery on Sunday it is not available to postal patrons until the next business day [that must be efficiency].

Some felt on Friday that some of the school administrators had a 3-day skiing weekend planned and, of course, the peasants would never know, as they cannot afford to go.

Local residents were amused to hear about the gag order issued by the new boss down at the Mouth of the Elk River that says state employees cannot talk to the media. Even though Fanny Seiler is gone the truth will get out.

This must mean that several more "ethics" violations have been found and someone (or perhaps several are) is running scared.

Local residents who had to go to Parkersburg Saturday noted that roads were clear but they were surprised to find that Route 95 (Camden Avenue) was just being plowed at 11 A. M. but, of course, perhaps those in authority may consider Route 95 to be a back street on south side.

Some folks down at the governor's ball said they were surprised to see Tom Badgett there although it is understood he is in line for a big state road job.

Herbert Stewart, age 77, passed away. He was a son of Jennings and Lurline Arthur Stewart. The family formerly lived on Big Run of Little Creek. Herb was a grandson of Dr. David S. Stewart, the famous Creston physician.

Dorene Parsons has been on the sick list and was treated at the emergency room.

Mr. & Mrs. "Stymie" Plummer have been visiting in Creston.

The Asplunth crew has been cutting trees and applying herbicide on Ann's Run for the power company.

Jane Engelke has been busy lately. Earlier in the month she worked as an assistant make up artist for a pilot Tee Vee show in South Beach Florida, then she met with some USA Pageant clients in Detroit and had a trade show booth at the Fairs & Festival show at the Mouth of Elk River.

Five of her clients were in the top 15 including the queen and 2nd runner-up. Ashlee Small competed as Ripley 4th of July and had the audience rolling with laughter which earned her a top 15 slot.

Amber Somerville, the Wirt County Fair queen was also a standout and she said, "I have never felt so pretty in my life." Danielle Burns, Susan Myers and her mother helped her with the booth. Jane also gave a workshop for other state pageant directors.

On Sunday Jane, along with 50 other WTAP Tee Vee advertisers, returned from Cancun where they had spent a week as a gift of the station.

Anna Engelke & the Funchester Group had a $10 night where one eats out & goes to the picture show, all for less than an Alexander Hamilton. Anna will host the group Thursday for supper for "must see" night.

Cosmo spent a week at the farm and learned about all sorts of things that "city slickers" just don't know or experience.

Matthew Copen was thawing some pipes for Charles & Euell Russell.

The price of local Penn grade crude rose over the weekend to $45.25/bbl.

Jeremy Ferrell purchased an automobile from Kim Plummer.

The regular meeting of the Creston Community organization is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1 at 7 P. M. at the Community Building. All willing workers are urged to attend. Usually a prominent Little Creek candy maker brings fresh fudge. Local cooks should start gathering up their favorite recipes for a community cook book.
