Calhoun is riding a modest two-game winning streak and is in the midst of
hot streak that has netted it four wins in the last five games that has
brought it back to almost the .500 level.
The Red Devils will seek to reach .500 tonight when they travel to Clay
County.
In its last game Calhoun hammered back-yard foe Gilmer County 74-42 in what
was probably its best game of the season. Jake Perkins led the way for the
Red Devils with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Tom Gerwig added 19 and Mike
Batten 18. In that game Gerwig and Batten were deadly from outside with
Gerwig hitting five three-point goals and Batten four. Steve Cunningham had
a strong game against the Titans with nine rebounds while Chad Conley had
seven assists.
The Red Devils charge has been somewhat parallel to the play of Gerwig.
Gerwig, who averaged around 28 points a game for the Calhoun junior varsity
last season, was averaging 2.4 points a game through the first seven games.
But in the last two games - both easy Calhoun wins - he has averaged 16.5.
When Gerwig and Batten are hitting from outside it clears the way for
Perkins and 6-3 Tristan Harris on the inside, which makes the Red Devils'
offense go.
Following tonight's game the Red Devils will return home on Thursday to try
to avenge an earlier defeat suffered at the hands of Braxton County. Braxton
beat Calhoun 55-40 earlier in the season.
