Evelyn Stump Thomas Kirby, 84, of Grantsville, died May 11 in St. Joseph's Hospital in
Parkersburg after a brief illness. She was known by area residents as "Bob." She was
born at Rocksdale in 1917, the daughter of Alvin and Maude Cooper Stump. The
Stump homestead was at the mouth of Henry's Fork where it empties into the West
Fork of the Little Kanawha. The house was built after the Civil War.

She was a former employee of Rubber Fabricators and a member of the First Baptist
Church of Grantsville.
Surviving, daughter Judy Hembree of Wadsworth, Ohio; step-daughter, Lena Grubbs of
Madison, Alabama; step-son David Kirby of Charleston; sisters Mame Lowe and Emma
Brumbaugh of Akron, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Winfield
Thomas in 1970 and her second husband Roy Kirby in 1978; brothers, Charles, Alvin,
Russell and Leon Stump; sister, Grace Cleavenger; half-sister, Pauline Mace; a
stepdaughter, Lydia Evelyn Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the First Baptist Church of
Grantsville with the Revs. Robert Nicholas and Lewis Villers, and Pastor Allen Stump.
Burial will be in the Broomstick Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m.
until time of service.
