Amber Knapp, Registered Dental Hygienist for Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center has completed certification to administer local anesthesia.
During the week of December 1-4, 2004, Amber participated in "Pain Control for the Dental Hygienist" at West Virginia University Institute of Technology. The course teaches the Velvet Touch technique. This technique is designed to significantly reduce pain associated with dental treatment. Amber will utilize this technique while performing extensive or deep cleanings or at the patient's request. Local anesthesia is not commonly needed for regular dental cleanings. However, for those individuals with periodontal disease, local anesthesia can make dental treatment much more comfortable.
"During the class we worked together and gave each other injections. I was a little worried about feeling pain but the Velvet Touch really works. Most of the injections I didn't even feel," said Amber.
